Call Sign Chaos Pdf

ISBN: B07SHVNJWQ
Title: Call Sign Chaos Pdf Learning to Lead

A clear-eyed account of learning how to lead in a chaotic world, by General Jim Mattis - the former Secretary of Defense and one of the most formidable strategic thinkers of our time - and Bing West, a former assistant secretary of defense and combat Marine.

Call Sign Chaos is the account of Jim Mattis' storied career, from wide-ranging leadership roles in three wars to ultimately commanding a quarter of a million troops across the Middle East. Along the way, Mattis recounts his foundational experiences as a leader, extracting the lessons he has learned about the nature of warfighting and peacemaking, the importance of allies, and the strategic dilemmas - and short-sighted thinking - now facing our nation. He makes it clear why America must return to a strategic footing so as not to continue winning battles but fighting inconclusive wars.

Mattis divides his book into three parts: Direct Leadership, Executive Leadership, and Strategic Leadership. In the first part, Mattis recalls his early experiences leading Marines into battle, when he knew his troops as well as his own brothers. In the second part, he explores what it means to command thousands of troops, and how to adapt your leadership style to ensure your intent is understood by your most junior troops so that they can own their mission. In the third part, Mattis describes the challenges and techniques of leadership at the strategic level, where military leaders reconcile war's grim realities with political leaders' human aspirations, where complexity reigns and the consequences of imprudence are severe, even catastrophic.

Call Sign Chaos is a memoir of a life of warfighting and lifelong learning, following along as Mattis rises from Marine recruit to four-star general. It is a journey about learning to lead and a story about how he, through constant study and action, developed a unique leadership philosophy, one relevant to us all.

True leadership Inspiration for me to be a better man and lead by example.Awesome read Fabulous read from Mad Dog, loved the detailed background and inside information about how politicians are bad decisions. I wish he would run for President!~~Leadership Explained in Detail~~ September 3, 2019Format: HardcoverI am a USN Chief Petty Officer (Ret) and absolutely loved this book by the General... As explained in the blurb, it is divided into 3 sections..direct leadership, executive leadership and strategic leadership.Reading is an excellent way to broaden my horizons and this book did exactly that for me. The Marines, of course, are famiiar to me but this book gave me further insight into their training. I had no idea, for example, that all are trained as Infantry Officers first. And, when they go up the ladder in the 'O's that they are given a new book to study for that position. This one will explain leadership techniques to anyone that is interested. One of my favorite parts was that the intent of the leader must be understood. The three C's ....competence, caring and conviction were also mentioned. The caring part is so true when being a leader as those junior troops will not only hear that but feel it...in their hearts.I did have one laugh out loud moment in remembering my days as a USN recruiter. Tough times for both of us, it appears. He, of course, was in charge of the recruiters and I was on the receiving end. The mid 1980's was not a good time for either of us!Just an outstanding book which I enjoyed reading thoroughly. I kept envisioning going into the USMC and advancing up the ladder to eventually become the Secretary of Defense. A plus 40 years of service in the Corps. Wow..just wow... Truly hope you enjoy your well deserved retirement...as we say in the USN. Bravo Zulu, Sir... I salute you. Most highly recommended and for multiple reasons., integrity, honesty, service to country and an outstanding style of leadership...Will contact Amazon about the lack of the Verified Purchase as I did purchase it ... It’s Christmas in Sinful and Fortune is set to participate in all the local hoopla. A Christmas gala, caroling, and a sleigh ride are on the agenda. Murder is not. But when someone bumps off Santa, Fortune is aware a killer is lurking among the holiday cheer. But with no client and no reason to interfere with a police investigation, it looks as if Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie will have to sit this one out.

Big and Little Hebert might be criminals, but they prefer no competition in their territory, especially someone brazen enough to kill a man at the Christmas gala. When they hire Fortune to investigate the man’s death, she gets her Christmas wish and Swamp Team 3 sets out to solve their final case of the year.

How to Be an Antiracist Download

ISBN: B07TT85KLQ
Title: How to Be an Antiracist Pdf

New York Times Best Seller

From the National Book Award-winning author of Stamped from the Beginning comes a "groundbreaking" (Time) approach to understanding and uprooting racism and inequality in our society - and in ourselves.

"The most courageous book to date on the problem of race in the Western mind." (The New York Times

Antiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism - and, even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. At it's core, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its warped logic extends beyond race, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and body types. Racism intersects with class and culture and geography and even changes the way we see and value ourselves. In How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi takes listeners through a widening circle of antiracist ideas - from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilites - that will help listeners see all forms of racism clearly, understand their poisonous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves.

Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science with his own personal story of awakening to antiracism. This is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond the awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a just and equitable society.

Praise for How to Be an Antiracist

"Ibram X. Kendi's new book, How to Be an Antiracist, couldn't come at a better time.... Kendi has gifted us with a book that is not only an essential instruction manual but also a memoir of the author's own path from anti-black racism to anti-white racism and, finally, to antiracism.... How to Be an Antiracist gives us a clear and compelling way to approach, as Kendi puts it in his introduction, 'the basic struggle we're all in, the struggle to be fully human and to see that others are fully human.'" (NPR)

"Kendi dissects why in a society where so few people consider themselves to be racist the divisions and inequalities of racism remain so prevalent. How to Be an Antiracist punctures the myths of a post-racial America, examining what racism really is-and what we should do about it." (Time)

Necessary and timely! Five luminous 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟stars! This is a bold book of reckoning. Kudos to Ibram Kendi for having the testicular fortitude to bring new ideas to the marketplace. Although antiracism isn’t necessarily a brand new idea, Kendi has placed his indelible stamp on it and will now be forever linked to it with this very important book. One of the things that impress, and is helpful in discussion and debate are clear definitions. As he did in his previous work, Stamped From The Beginning he is laborious about exactly defining the terms he uses. Readers will appreciate this as it helps to flush out clarity. And I would add, arms one against the attacks that are surely coming from all angles. I distinctly remember the debate around Afrocentricity and all the myriad ways that people defined it. The hijacking was possible because Molefi Asante possibly didn’t go deep enough in his definition of Afrocentricity, although that was later definitively corrected.Kendi is seeking to avoid this error writing, “defining our terms so that we could begin to describe the world and our place in it. Definitions anchor us in principles......Some of my most consequential steps toward being an antiracist have been the moments when I arrived at basic definitions....So let’s set some definitions. What is racism?” Kendi having spent time in Asante’s Africology Ph.D. program at Temple University might account for some of this diligence. We’ll come back to his definition, as that will surely become the cause of some attacks because he has dared to challenge long-held beliefs about racism, racists, and who can and cannot be considered racists. Whenever you are bold enough to offer new thoughts to the marketplace of ideas, you had better be ready for battle, and if this book is any indication Kendi is indeed ready. Alongside his guide to becoming antiracist, he offers his own personal journey which adds a personal flavor to the book and keeps it from sagging into academic boredom. So, for Black folk it’s true that many of us have a definition of racism, that excludes Blacks from being racist, well Kendi challenges that and forces us to possibly make an adjustment to our definition. That’s going to be a tough one for sure, but his arguments here are very cogent and considering his definition of racism, quite logical. When was the last time a book made you reconsider some defining principles? Wow! For non-Blacks, just saying well I’m ‘not racist‘ will no longer cut it. To wit, “What’s the problem with being ‘not racist’? It is a claim that signifies neutrality: ‘I am not a racist, but neither am I aggressively against racism.’ But there is no neutrality in the racism struggle. The opposite of “racist” isn’t “not racist.” It is “antiracist.” What’s the difference? One endorses either the idea of a racial hierarchy as a racist or racial equality as an antiracist.”With chapters on Power, Biology, Class, Black, White, etc. Kendi has made a thorough attempt to spark a movement towards antiracism, that results in a world where people actively and consciously fight against racism. Is that a pipe dream? As detailed here in this text, if we accept the definitions then no, it is indeed achievable, but we must do the work and it starts with the man in the mirror. That was the first place I went after finishing this book and contemplating this new definition of racism,“So let’s set some definitions. What is racism? Racism is a marriage of racist policies and racist ideas that produces and normalizes racial inequities. Okay, so what are racist policies and ideas?” Damn you, Kendi! What are racist policies and ideas, well you will have to get this book, READ and engage the ideas of antiracism and hopefully be on your way to becoming an Antiracist! Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Oneworld Publishing for an advanced DRC. Book will explode onto shelves Tues. August 13, 2019EYE-OPENING EXPLORATION OF RACISM Enlightening even for the supposedly enlightened...I am White. I am an immigrant. My family came to this country when I was 6 years old, by far the youngest. I learned English fluently; while you would hear the accent of my older relatives to this day, you would not know that I was not born here, that English was not my first language.I grew up on the idea of the Great American Melting Pot. Throughout my childhood and teen years, I was always seen as the person from the country of my origin. It wasn't until my college years that I was relieved to finally be seen as simply American, from California rather than from my country of origin. The Great American Melting Pot with its goal of assimilation made a lot of sense to me. We kept our family traditions, brought with us from the Old Country, at home. But outwardly, I wanted to fit in, to be simply American. It also made sense from an historical perspective. There was a time when Italians, Irish, Germans, and others fresh off the (literal) boat were seen as unwelcome newcomers, much as many from south of our border are sadly seen today. These European groups needed to assimilate. Imagine if Italian-Americans and German-Americans in this country had been seen as the enemy come World War II. Americans never could have come together to fight Hitler's armies or Japanese forces in the Pacific. But you may note that I've only mentioned the assimilation of white people from Western Europe. People from China and Japan also faced persecution when they first arrived here (as no doubt did many others). The internment camps created during World War II for those of Japanese descent living in this country were a disgrace. (Please read They Called Us Enemy by George Takei.) To mention nothing of the Black or Hispanic experience of being American in this country. What hit me hardest about this incredible book is largely summed by by the following paragraph:“Assimilationist ideas and segregationist ideas are the two types of racist ideas, the duel within racist thought. White assimilationist ideas challenge segregationist ideas that claim people of color are incapable of development, incapable of reaching the superior standard, incapable of becoming White and therefore fully human. Assimilationists believe that people of color can, in fact, be developed, become fully human, just like White people. Assimilationist ideas reduce people of color to the level of children needing instruction on how to act. Segregationist ideas cast people of color as “animals,” to use Trump's descriptor for Latinx immigrants—unteachable after a point. The history of the racialized world is a three-way fight between assimilationists, segregationists, and antiracists. Antiracist ideas are based in the truth that racial groups are equals in all the ways they are different, assimilationist ideas are rooted in the notion that certain racial groups are culturally or behaviorally inferior, and segregationist ideas spring from a belief in genetic racial distinction and fixed hierarchy.”I have always fancied myself to be not racist. But I can see that I have a long way to go: from assimilationist to antiracist. Even my assimilationist ideas were clearly not well thought out.Read this book. It's eyeopening, even for those of us who consider ourselves to be enlightened.Well written. Extensively researched, with a good deal of history, including personal and family history. Extensively footnoted. Highly readable.

Lone Survivor Pdf

ISBN: 0316067601
Title: Lone Survivor Pdf The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10
Author: Marcus Luttrell
Published Date: 2008-05-01
Page: 416

Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell joined the United States Navy in March 1999, became a combat-trained Navy SEAL in January 2002, and has served in Afghanistan and Iraq. He lives in Texas. Patrick Robinson is known for his best-selling US Navy-based novels and his autobiography of Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward, One Hundred Days, was an international bestseller. He lives in England and spends his summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he and Luttrell wrote Lone Survivor.

A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan.

Inspiration for a major motion picture by Mark Wahlberg.

On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.

A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich , moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Too many inconsistancies, innacuracies, and contradictions I was excited to read this book, however some red flags came up early with some inconsistencies and contradictions, and those only continued as the book went on. I commend the sailor for his service and his bravery in combat, and I offer my condolences for the men he lost. I have nothing negative to say about the author, only the book. It's unfortunate because the true story is so fascinating and the bravery of what those men did is incomprehensible. Unfortunately, I think the book does disservice to what they actually did. This is similar to American Sniper where Chris Kyle had an amazing story, but tainted it with too much fabrications and false claims. The actual story would have been great through. Some examples:* He talks about the silent warriors who need no recognition for what they do, yet he writes a book demanding recognition for what they do, and boasting throughout the book about their accomplishments, abilities, and importance.* He complains about the rules of combat and inability to kill civilians when he wants to, and sites the fact that it has been done in war for "a million" years, but then complains about the enemy that what they are doing killing civilians is barbaric and from the middle ages.*Complains about the enemy being barbaric, yet defends the torture at Abu Garib*Talks about how the SEALS will gladly do whatever their government asks including die, but then complains about the "suits" who don't know what the hell they are doing and shouldn't be telling them how to fight a war.*Talks about the how SEALS have no fear and would gladly fight to the death with no signs of fear, yet he starts the book with the memory of his fellow sealing crying out to him to help save him. (please note, I have no doubt these are the bravest of men, and there is no shame is calling out for help of being afraid... my point is only that he contradicts himself.)*promotes the long since debunked WMD myth from Iraq*promotes the long since debunked link of Al Qaeda to Saddam.*describes the enemy fighting for a god that condones killing civilians, then talks about how the SEALS fight for their own God, and that killing Civilians is a normal part of wars throughout history and necessary.*Describes the enemy numbers at over 100 when most reports say there were probably no more than 20-40 men.*Describes killing dozens of enemy, however the Marines were unable to recover any bodies or confirm any kills.*Describes the only options as killing the goat herders or letting them go, however there were other options such as taking them captive and aborting the mission.*Talks about Ahmed Shah as being one of the highest ranking Al Qaeda leader, however he was not.*(this one is not an inconsistency, but just detracts from the book) Goes on a long tirade about the liberal media, politicians, and liberals in general. Too political.Great Read Couldn’t put this book down. As usual the book is much, much better than the movie. Actually, the movie follows along with the books concepts and what Marcus went through but each event was different in the book compared to the movie. Also, there are a lot of lies out there about how many Taliban they faced. You have these disgusting journalist that want to put our military down and lie. According to eye witness accounts and the military records, Mr. Latrell and his team faced 150 to 200 Taliban. They killed over 100 of the Taliban. The lame and poor excuse for journalist say 32 Taliban and some have even go as far as to say that not even 100 could live in that area; wrong! The 32 number comes from how many Taliban were killed when they rescued Marcus.Read this book because the movie, is great, but doesn’t do the book justice. This great nation is 'great' because we adhere to a moral ... Fascinating book! Puts us into the minds of soldiers and the brotherhood they adhere to in order to survive and in a sense are addicted. The alpha males and their domain - and I am very grateful for them and their sacrifice. (Spoiler alert) Marcus blames the 'liberal' media for making them decide to let the goat herders go instead of killing them. Ultimately it was the goat herders' release that led the enemy to their doorstep. My problem with this whole 'idea' was why didn't they just gag them and leave them on the hill - and then get out? The mission had been compromised. Hence this is my problem with the guy's premise that it's somehow the liberal media's fault that his buddies got killed? Really? My one complaint is the bashing of 'lefties' 'liberals' and the 'media.' I get the resentment, but I don't get the continual need for his book to go after the 'left' They aren't the enemy - nor is the right. . We are Americans at heart, liberal or right or whatever. Our tenets of freedom of press means we all have the right to speak our mind and our America is everyone's America. This great nation is 'great' because we adhere to a moral ground on certain things and that's important and it's important for the press to look for the stories of the disadvantaged etc. and yes, maybe what they see as abusive power by the military and no we haven't put the Navy Seals into jail for killing Osama Bin Laden - (and yes we had a 'liberal 'President in charge when it happened). The trained soldiers are trained to go into 'harms' way - the press is not - but they are the eyes we need to see the truth. As a navy seal, I would expect you to voice an opinion which was more balanced. I am a patriot too, because I know what our Constitution says - once we sink to the enemies level of 'hatred' and disregard for life - we loose the moral battle. Again, absolutely no disrespect to our soldiers in uniform - I support them and will continue to give money to the veterans groups I support - but PLEASE stop the liberal bashing. In fact, we become our own worst enemies when we make our fellow American's our enemies. I'm so tired of it.

Title: The Last Conversation (Forward collection) Pdf

Audible narration by Steven Strait (The Expanse)
What’s more frightening: Not knowing who you are? Or finding out? A Bram Stoker Award–winning author explores the answer in a chilling story about identity and human consciousness.

Imagine you’ve woken up in an unfamiliar room with no memory of who you are, how you got there, or where you were before. All you have is the disconnected voice of an attentive caretaker. Dr. Kuhn is there to help you—physically, emotionally, and psychologically. She’ll help you remember everything. She’ll make sure you reclaim your lost identity. Now answer one question: Are you sure you want to?

Paul Tremblay’s The Last Conversation is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

Altogether strange and unsettling, Paul Tremblay tells an all-too-real, immersive short story I will read anything and everything by Paul Tremblay. He is one of those authors that aims for your secret, undisclosed fears--some of which you don't even know about into you're knee-deep into one of his novels and plain scared out of your mind by some fresh horror you wish didn't exist. This short story, THE LAST CONVERSATION, tapped a new fear for me. The narrative resembles an omniscient 2nd person POV, employing YOU to play the role of the main character.YOU wake up in a strange room feeling disoriented and unsure of who you are or what you're doing in this laboratory-like environment. A woman initiates a conversation with you through a speaker in the room. From this point on, Paul Tremblay stitches together a strange and subtly unsettling story piece by piece as "you" slowly start to remember the events leading up to your present-day situation. As I was reading it, I felt like I was involved in a Black Mirror episode--an unwavering sense of dread as I drew closer and closer to the conclusion.I absolutely love this story.Thought-Provoking Decided to give this one a go first as I am a huge fan of Tremblay's. He is quickly becoming one of the best short-story writers out there, especially after his amazing Growing Things and Other Stories collection that came out in July. This one is quick, like the others in the Forward series, and is very thought-provoking to say the least. It is also quite terrifying seeing X's first-hand experience as it feels very real. Sort of feels like the initial reveal in Hugh Howey's Wool.Interesting take on more than few old tropes... Although it is a short story, it was still a fun ride! Definitely a different take on end of the world type scenarios...but I think a much needed side trip. I've often wished there were more stories where a scientist takes on a more human role, and not just a last-minute heroic attempt as the plague overtakes or the zombies eat them alive or the planet explodes. It was a nice little short story. Not overly fantastic, but definitely worth the time. I definitely recommend...if for no other reason than to have a short escape.
