"An ode to William Faulkner. . . . As Southern as it gets."—Deep South Magazine

A compelling addition to contemporary Southern Gothic fiction, deftly weaving together local legends, family secrets, and the search for a missing child.
Siblings Bert, Willet, and Pansy know better than to go swimming at the old rock quarry. According to their father, it's the Devil's place, a place that's been cursed and forgotten. But Mississippi Delta summer days are scorching hot and they can't resist cooling off in the dark, bottomless water. Until the day six-year-old Pansy vanishes. Not drowned, not lost . . . simply gone. When their father disappears as well, Bert and Willet leave their childhoods behind to try and hold their broken family together.

Years pass with no sign, no hope of ever finding Pansy alive, and as surely as their mother died of a broken heart, Bert and Willet can't move on. So when clues surface drawing them to the remote tip of Florida, they drop everything and drive south. Deep in the murky depths of the Florida Everglades they may find the answer to Pansy's mysterious disappearance . . . but truth, like the past, is sometimes better left where it lies.

Perfect for fans of Flannery O'Connor and Dorothy Allison, The Past Is Never is an atmospheric, haunting story of myths, legends, and the good and evil we carry in our hearts.

compelling mystery I loved this book. It's a wonderful mystery wrapped in a family saga. As the relationships between people unfold and each generation gives up its secrets, the story holds on to the reader tighter and tighter. A multi-layered study of human nature and the times the characters lived through make this book a keeper. Happy ending? Hard to say. Realistic, yes. It's Not Even Past The title and setting, partially set in the woods and cotton fields of Mississippi, clearly invoke Faulkner. The writing is not so much like Faulkner, but the story sure is. The narrator's young sister vanishes while swimming in the local flooded quarry. A quarry their father says is cursed and haunted. Their itinerant criminal father also seemingly vanishes when he fails to return home. The years go by and our narrator grows up and searches for answers that leads her to the Florida Everglades. Family secrets, race, superstition, legend, murder, good & evil... all mix in a way familiar to anyone that's read ‘Absalom, Absalom!’"The past is never dead. It's not even past." I think Faulkner would approve.Boring, average writing, shallow characters The first few pages of this book made it seem intriguing. And ... It had won a prize! That makes it a good book, right?Wrong.Comparing this book to Faulkner - just because the author used a cheap trick by selecting a Faulkner quote for the book's title - is like comparing a fine Thoroughbred to a country mule. This is not Faulkneresque. It's not Walker Percy-esque. Or Eudora Welty-esque. It's a poser of a book, a book that pretends to be Southern gothic, that teases you with a mystery, then draws out the mystery for pages and pages - long after the plot should actually have gone somewhere - and in the end - SPOILER ALERT - what happened is just what one of the main characters thinks happened all along. All the malarky about Bubba and the aliens, and Granny Clem and all the women she helps ... it's all BS. It's filler to kill time because the author didn't really have much of a plot. The author could have left out Bubba and the aliens and most of Granny Clem's bit without affecting the story, but again, it was a cheap trick designed to fool you because, really, the author didn't have anything but an obvious solution to the "mystery." So Dad took Pansy. Gee. What we all thought was most likely ended up being the answer. The book goes back and forth in time, without any warning. Somewhere in the middle of the book you suddenly lurch backward in time. These episodes are handled quite clumsily by the author, are not well done, and they don't add to the mystery. The reader figures out who these people are from the very first, and thereafter the answer to the mystery, about 200 pages before the author gets around to finally revealing what we've already known.I love a good Southern book. This isn't it. Though it does have a lot of Southern clichés and of course we have to throw in some racism for flavor to make it authentic. I gave it two stars because it's long and the author - I guess - spent time on it, but why this book won a prize is beyond me. The writing is only average; about a third of the book could have been cut out and made for a tighter, better story; and the author never made me care about the characters. Even the narrator is a ditz and a whiner. I had to make myself finish it because I hate paying for something I don't finish. But man, it was hard to keep going.Avoid this book and read Faulkner instead. I recommend "As I Lay Dying" or "Flags in the Dust." Just for starters.

Title: Talking to Strangers Pdf What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know

Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and number-one best-selling author of The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, David and Goliath, and What the Dog Saw, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers - and why they often go wrong.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true?

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland - throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his number one best seller, David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

Doesn't deliver. As one reviewer mentioned, the Interlude and the section on Brock Turner are absolutely cringeworthy for a host of reasons. I too almost stopped reading before the I got to the first chapter, and now I'm sort of disappointed that I read all the way to the end. Fascinating facts are revealed in typical Gladwell fashion which keeps the pace moving. But he comes terribly short on providing any sort of value for actually talking to strangers. Gladwell basically says, "Hey! We suck at talking to strangers. Here's some interesting situations that prove my point. But I have no ideas on how to be better at talking to strangers."Sadly, Gladwell places his foot in his mouth... Wow, does this book ever suffer from a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease!I almost didn’t make it past the introduction. In my pre-publication copy, Gladwell writes, “The Sandra Bland case came in the middle of a strange interlude in American public life” and then goes on to discuss a series of cases of police violence against black people that happened around 2014.“Strange interlude.” Really? That phrasing suggests that this treatment was some sort of aberration in American history and that the violence only happened during the few years he references. Did Gladwell really mean to ignore America’s long history of this problem?I don’t think so? I think he may have meant that the attention paid to police violence was unusual, but dude, choose your words much more carefully.Later on, there are some good points made about how and why we tend to misunderstand each other. But, again, I almost put the book down, this time while reading the chapter on the Brock Turner sexual assault case. Without going into detail, that chapter could only have been written by someone who's buried his head in the sand over the past five years or so.It’s tough to ignore the problematic elements of Talking to Strangers. I could definitely see the discussion of the causes of sexual assault offending some readers to the point that they abandon the book altogether. I’ve definitely enjoyed other books by the author a lot more than this one. Two stars. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for giving me a DRC of this book."We think we can easily see into the hearts of others based on the flimsiest of clues." Malcolm Gladwell is a gifted writer who engages our minds and emotions in his works of non-fiction. In "Talking to Strangers,” he tells us true stories that, at first, seem to be unrelated. A police stop ends in tragedy; Neville Chamberlain and other political figures famously misconstrued Hitler's bellicose intentions; experienced judges grant bail to defendants who, they realize too late, should have remained in jail; the sociopath, Bernie Madoff, conducted a fraudulent investment scheme for years, deceiving many individuals who thought that he was a genius at making money; Amanda Knox served prison time for a murder that she did not commit.Studies show that most of us who encounter apparently benevolent individuals are predisposed to believe that they are not putting on an act. Conversely, when we meet a man or woman who behaves weirdly or inappropriately, we are likely to jump to negative conclusions about him or her, even when there is little hard evidence to support our assumptions. The author suggests that many of us have an inflated opinion of our ability to size up people. Research suggests that we are not as objective as we would like to believe, and are therefore prone to misinterpret comments, intonations, facial expressions, and gestures. Moreover, we do not always realize that people whose backgrounds differ from ours may communicate in unfamiliar ways.Gladwell asks: How did double-agents who telegraphed their guilt get away with their treasonous behavior for so long? Why didn't everyone recognize Madoff for what he is—a ruthless swindler? Which of Amanda Knox's personality traits, remarks, and deeds convinced Italian authorities that she killed her roommate? These compelling examples raise intriguing questions about why we sometimes reach erroneous conclusions when we assess the truthfulness of our fellow human beings. it should be noted that a few chapters in this book—such as the essays on suicide, young adults who drink so heavily that they black out, and the efforts of police to cut down on crime—are thought-provoking but oversimplified and not particularly relevant to Gladwell's central premise. Still, this work of non-fiction is an entertaining and enlightening wake-up call. We should be cautious when we decide who our friends are as opposed to who is likely to stab us in the back. Too often we are dead wrong.

Title: The LSAT Trainer Pdf A Remarkable Self-Study Guide For The Self-Driven Student
Author: Mike Kim
Published Date: 2017-04-02
Page: 598

Hi, I'm Mike Kim. Thank you for considering the Trainer for your LSAT prep needs. I have spent many years developing LSAT learning products, training LSAT instructors, and, most importantly, working with LSAT students. I've seen countless students improve their scores significantly, and, unfortunately, I've also seen countless students not improve their scores significantly. I understand the common challenges that students face, and I understand how students actually get better at this exam. I've put everything I know about the test into The LSAT Trainer.Mike Kim is one of the most well-known and well-respected teachers in the LSAT industry. Mike has a unique ability to understand the architecture of standardized exams, and more importantly, Mike has a proven ability to help students drastically improve their scores. Previously, Mike co-created and oversaw the development of the Manhattan LSAT books and courses. Inspired by self-driven students who prepare for the LSAT on their own, he set out to create the ultimate self-study guide, and The LSAT Trainer is the result.

The LSAT Trainer is an LSAT prep book specifically designed for self-motivated self-study students who are seeking significant score improvement on the Law School Admission Test. It is simple, smart, and remarkably effective.

Teachers, students, and reviewers all agree: The LSAT Trainer is the most advanced and effective LSAT prep product available today. Whether you are new to the LSAT or have been studying for a while, you will find invaluable benefit in the Trainer's teachings, strategies, drills, and solutions.

The LSAT Trainer includes:
  • over 200 official LSAT questions and real-time solutions
  • simple and battle-tested strategies for every type of Logical Reasoning question, Reading Comprehension question, and Logic Game
  • over 30 original and unique drills designed to help develop LSAT-specific skills and habits
  • access to a variety of free study schedules, notebook organizers, and much more.

If you're going to self-study, buy this book. If you're self-studying, do yourself a favor and get this book. I know there are so many books available and it can feel overwhelming to choose, but one look at Mike Kim's website and reviews should tell you that this guy is the real deal. I read it cover to cover, completed every exercise, and got in the 94th percentile of the LSAT.This is THE Book to Get- 153 to a 168 Read this front to back and you won’t need an expensive course. He teaches you how to think about the problems and not just how to do them. I started about 3 months before the LSAT and went from a 153 diagnostic to a 168. I did not take one course and found they would almost offset the progress I made. Really focus and spend an hour a day working as this book suggests. I also listened to as many of the Thinking LSAT podcasts as I could (not affiliated to this book) but I found them to compliment each other extremely well. Your LSAT basically defines your law school opportunities , don’t waste time or resources. I highly recommend this book!!Not the best, but better than most So you just spent $180 registering for the LSAT, and an additional $175 for CAS (which is the biggest racket ever because that $175 only covers storing your information - in order to distribute it to schools, it's another $30 per application). When they told you "Law School isn't cheap!" they weren't lying. Here's the thing: What book you use depends on how you think. I took the LSAT last year and used a combination of Kaplan and Princeton Review - didn't feel like I learned a damn thing and my test scores showed that (still got a decent score - but didn't get into my school of choice or a substantial financial aid package). Both of those books focused a lot on timing and on the day of the test, in spite of the fact that I practiced using LSAT Preptests left and right, I sat there twiddling my thumbs for at least five minutes after each section, believing that I couldn't do any better.I'm halfway through The LSAT Trainer, and my times for games are way down (Kim uses a different diagramming model that makes sense to me more than Kaplan or Princeton Review), and I genuinely know how to approach logical reasoning questions in all of their forms. The biggest pro: The explanations.I'm one of those people who can't learn unless I know what I did wrong. If that's your affliction, this book explains most problems to you. I can backtrack, reread the problem and figure out exactly where I went wrong and what needs to happen to get it right. Halfway through the book and when I'm wrong, I was able to narrow down the answers to the two most viable options.Things that bother me: Sections do have errors (there's a crappy "Rate how you did section" that tells you to rate yourself 1 - 5 on five different criteria, then has you total it out of 20 instead of 25), and the denotation of answers changes throughout the book (sometimes they are bold, sometimes circled, sometimes just wrong answers are crossed out).Is this the best book out there? Probably not, but after forking out $355 before even taking the damn test, you better believe that I'm not about to fork out another $150 for the PowerScore books, especially when, like most people, I'm not in an area where a print version can be acquired before buying - and that's a lot of money (money that could be better spent sending me scores to five schools through the mandatory CAS system). But, here's the thing: The LSAT is a test that is designed not to be finished. I've known people who woke up the morning of without ever studying and people who dropped thousands of dollars on prep courses who scored the same. I've known people who took practice tests, spent thousands on prep courses and scored the exact same on the test the day of.If you have a decent test taking foundation, this book will likely help you.If you have no idea how to do logic games, this book will likely help you.If you're struggling with understanding why you're getting logical reasoning questions wrong, this book will likely help you.If you get this book and insist that it didn't help you at all because you couldn't understand it and it didn't provide enough of an explanation, do not become a lawyer.

    Hope you enjoy.

A great read with an amazing amount of information! So I originally learned of this through the author's newsletter and downloaded it upon release.. As a Scoutmaster, I have to say that the start of the book hooked me because this kind of thing is EXACTLY why we all do what we do. Having at least 1 of our youth fall in love with the outdoors makes it all worth it,I started reading slowly as I knew, I just knew, that I would get the bug and want to do a thru-hike of my own. I have a Philmont trek (my second as an adult) scheduled later this year and I will be re-reading this a couple times before I head out as I have a couple of gear changes I'll be making to my personal equipment based on Chris' experiences in the book. I've used SmartWater bottles on my desk at work for years, but never had I thought to replace my heavy Nalgene's with them while backpacking. I'll probably still keep one Nalgene in my pack as I backback too many places with dry camps and would feel more secure knowing that I at least have 1 liter of water that cannot accidentally get punctured coming in and out of the pack or more likely by a wild animal when it's not strung up in the bear bag.The flow and writing style are perfect for this kind of book. You really feel like you know Chris and were on his adventure with him while he tells you what he learned out there. The State-by-State breakdown of the hike was pretty amazing. The resource lists, even better. Including a sample letter for how to ask for sponsorship to help offset the cost of hiking, especially considering I'm sure Chris and his company will be getting plenty of sponsorship requests from all the readers (he might eventually regret putting that part in the book), was very thoughtful. The systematic and step-by-step approach of the book takes a Herculean tasks and brings it down to more of a mortal and achievable goal. I will be hiking the AT. It may start as just section hikes until I can somehow find the time to do my own thru-hike (most likely when I snap and tell a boss to shove it or I retire). While I didn't come away from this book with a ton of new information on hiking in general, what I am taking from the book will help every time I go out. Amazingly enough, it wasn't even a week after reading Chris' account of his bear encounter that I treed my own bear. The description of what happens when that bear comes down out of the tree was exactly what I experienced and it was one of the most amazing things I've had happen on a solo hike (thankfully my encounter was only 1 bear).Best piece of advice Chris gives in this is to truly embrace the life of living on the trail. Get dirty, get rained on, get stinky, and make friends but revel in ALL of it as if you don't it will become a chore and you'll start feeling miserable and drop out (major paraphrasing going on there).Hike On!Get out there and follow his advice you won't go wrong As a seasoned long distance hiker I was skeptical that any book would cover everything someone would need to know to do the AT or any other long distance hike. I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Chris seems to have covered everything and so many times I found myself saying 'Yes I agree'. Somethings he suggests things I do, other things I have tried and changed, and still others I don't necessarily agree with from my experience, and yet all his ideas are sound. This is a wonderful book to get anyone enthusiastic and prepared for Long distance hiking anywhere, not just on the AT.Get out there and follow his advice you won't go wrong.A fresh look at how to become a successful long distant hiker. This is the best book I read on how to be a successful long distant hiker. I found the format refreshing. Less on the Appalachian experience and more on how to have a great experience on a long distant hike. The chapters on hydration, gear, clothing and food were particularly well researched and well written. I believe one of the most important items you covered is mental preparedness and a deep internal desire and passion to make such an arduous multi month journey a thru- hike entails.I have a few comments on items I found very important in long distant hiking. These were lessons l learned during several long distant section hikes on the PCT. I'm currently preparing for a Calendar Triple Crown in 2020. I'll be hiking nearly 8,000 miles in 10 months, or 3.6 times the distance of the Appalachian Trail.Lessons from a long distant hiker:1. Mental preparedness is absolutely the number one item any long distant hiker needs to work on. You must be mentally prepared before venturing into the wilderness for several months.2. Train with and wear calf high compression socks on all long distant hikes. I have used these for years and have never had any foot or leg swelling and these also prevented me from having any hotspots or blisters on my feet. I'm averaging 30 miles per day, starting on day one with No Pain! Look into socks made by CEP.3. Hydration is often the most over looked and misunderstood fundamental of long distant hiking. I start off the morning at 6:00 AM drinking 32 oz. of water mixed with concentrated electrolyte solution (look into a product called LyteShow). I hike for two hours while drinking 32 oz. of electrolyte water, I then stop, find and purify two quarts of water. I add electrolyte solution and drink a quart of water and resume hiking while drinking the other quart of electrolyte water. At the end of my 12 hour hiking day I have consumed 12 quarts of electrolyte water. Dehydration reduces your energy and mental alertness by 30%. Most hikers have no idea how much water to drink or the importance that all their water needs to contain electrolytes.4. Your chapter on food was excellent. I find that 99% of the long distant hikers I meet on the trails never carry sufficient calories for the hike their doing. For my long distant hikes I carry 28.5 oz. of food per day, this gives me 4,070 calories, or 143 calories per oz. I have done 4 week section hikes averaging 180 miles per week and have lost only 1 lb.5. The chapter on gear was well thought out. When I reviewed the pages of the equipment you took on your hike I didn't see a base wt. for your backpack and equipment. The base wt. for my backpack with the equipment that can handle 110 degree weather down to zero degrees comfortably is only 12 lbs. I carry 4 days of food at a time with a wt. of 8 lbs. (I'll be averaging 150 miles for each 5 day supply of food. When water supplies are good, I carry just one quart of water at a time. At the start of the PCT at the Mexican boarder, that increases to over a gallon of water and the food supply goes down to 3 days. The max wt, of my 45 liter Rarely exceeds 22 lbs. Only snowshoes and extra water would bring my total backpack wt. to exceed 22 lbs. Lighter is always better!.6. One of the main reasons I can keep the base wt. of my backpack to 14 lbs and still comfortably handle zero degree weather with 50 mph winds is my ultra light weight Vapor Barrier Clothing. All the VB clothing I need to be comfortable at zero degrees weighs only 26 oz. This includes a VB cap, face guard, gloves, socks, jacket and pants. I used my VB clothing inside my 15 degree top quilt at minus 5 degrees and was very comfortable. Look into VB clothing made by RBH Designs.Long distant hikers will certainly learn and benefit from your book and the lessons you gained during your Appalachian thru-hike. As a long distant hiker I appreciate the effort and research you put into your book. I hope to meet you on the trail.Max Walker

From all her experiences, she has gleaned life lessons―which, for fourteen years, she's shared in O, The Oprah Magazine's widely popular "What I Know For Sure" column, a monthly source of inspiration and revelation.

Now, for the first time, these thoughtful gems have been revised, updated, and collected in What I Know For Sure, a beautiful cloth bound book with a ribbon marker, packed with insight and revelation from Oprah Winfrey. Organized by theme―joy, resilience, connection, gratitude, possibility, awe, clarity, and power―these essays offer a rare, powerful and intimate glimpse into the heart and mind of one of the world's most extraordinary women―while providing readers a guide to becoming their best selves. Candid, moving, exhilarating, uplifting, and frequently humorous, the words Oprah shares in What I Know For Sure shimmer with the sort of truth that readers will turn to again and again.

Fulfilling First of all, it's Oprah. Second of all, her beliefs, sentiments, vulnerability and achievements are what we all have inside of us in some fashion. Bottom line, we all hold the power. She in reality is not anymore special than you and me, it's the good intentions you put out into the world that elevates you to greatness. The book reminds you of this. I strongly recommend the audio version. Her narration is perfect.I guess its not for everyone....... I bought this book after reading amazing reviews about it on Amazon. I really wanted to like this book, but it was just a bunch of small stories..........But I already read so many blogs/articles with similar stories that I just could not find anything new. I couldn't finish the book beyond the first 30% of it.One of my favorite books - EVER! This book has become a staple in our household that I have gifted, and re-gifted to so many people! If you are interested, the audio version of the book if read by Oprah herself, and gives you a different take on what she's emphasizing through each lesson.I recommend you read this book one lesson at a time and keep re-reading it for a few days until you've caught on to what she's trying to teach. That way you can really internalize the book and enjoy it throughout the entire year.I love it so much, that it has become a routine to read this book at least once a year and it's cheaper on Amazon then anywhere else I've been able to find so far.

Buy the app instead of book The book is a quality paperback for 14.25. The reason for only 3 stars is the price and the encouragement and evident need to purchase the smartphone app for another $17.99. It is possible that I can sell the book after vacation but the smartphone app will not be useful. At the very least, offer the app for free or substantial discount for purchase of the book and app. The app offers the same information as the book plus more real time information. The author talks about people offering to “help” but really wanting to sell you something. Sorry, Andrew, but you have fallen into the same mold.If I had not already bought the book, I would probably only buy the app. As it is I will probably use the book and download a different app.I will update my review on how useful the book actually is after our return from Hawaii. As for now, I do find the writer to be humorous.Great book to prepare for our trip! A friend of mine let me borrow this book from her book but it was about 10 years older. I liked it so much I decided to buy the most recent edition for our upcoming trip. I love the down to earth writing and all the tips it gives. There are lots of maps as well. Everything is a very honest opinion and if they didn't like something - they let you know. Not sugar coat things like in some other books or avoid them altogether. Everything is included - from drives to snorkeling to dining to all kinds of activities. I only wish that when your purchase the book you got access to the app for free. I was debating buying the app for our trip but I have not heard good things so I think we will just travel with our book. The perfect guide to Oahu This was an easy 5 star for me. I read the guide before leaving for Oahu and used it while we were there. There was a group of 5 all various ages of adults (18, 22, 25, 45 and 67). If we were on any part of the island I knew where we could eat. There wasn't one surprise from the time we were seated until the check was delivered, this guide was always on target. I think Seven Brothers was the greatest local experience. The customer service was excellent and when asked how we found them I got to give props to this guide. This was my third trip to Hawaii and I truly feel this was the best trip of them all because we had the island laid out for us so that we could choose the vacation experiences that best fit our group as a whole. We saw so much. My kids had not ever been to Hawaii and could not believe how much we packed into a 7 day vacation. There wasn't any time wasted driving from one end of the island to the other because we missed something. From dining to the best times to visit sights and attractions this is spot on. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is visiting Oahu for the first time or even returning. We purchased the Oahu Go card 3 day passes and saved a lot of money. Additionally, we used Google maps on our phones to navigate the island and didn't have any issues getting around. Thank you for this guide, it made our trip more successful than I ever thought possible!
