Title: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Book 2 Pdf

"'There is a plot, Harry Potter. A plot to make most terrible things happen at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this year.'"

Harry Potter's summer has included the worst birthday ever, doomy warnings from a house-elf called Dobby, and rescue from the Dursleys by his friend Ron Weasley in a magical flying car! Back at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his second year, Harry hears strange whispers echo through empty corridors - and then the attacks start. Students are found as though turned to stone... Dobby's sinister predictions seem to be coming true.

Art still allows for your imagination The Chamber of Secrets is in my opinion the weakest of the Harry Potter books. Still, it is a great read compared to 90% of other books in general, and 99% of other children's fantasy novels. The art in these books are simply amazing. They add to the story subtly, rather than take the story over as the movies did. To me, this is vital, as part of the joy of the Harry Potter world is the evocation of your imagination. I am happy to give my kids a little push with art, as they clearly still create their own images of quidditch, Hagrid, and the often explosive and unexpected effects of Ron's broken wand.An absolute must-have for the Harry Potter fan! IMPORTANT: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases. This difference isn't as prominent or noticeable as it was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, but still something to keep in mind. Also, to answer a question that has come up quite a bit, this is the FULL BOOK and not an abridged or shortened version. The overall quality is fantastic. The colors are vibrant and the images are, in my opinion, even better than those in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1).The best features:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy orange hardback with green lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains". In Chamber of Secrets (compared to Sorcerer's Stone), some pages even have beautiful patterns over the entire page. One page has a spider-web pattern and is right next to a picture of Aragog. Quite brilliant overall.I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. Based on the fact that the illustrations for this book were even better than in the first book, I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series even more. Prisoner of Azkaban is next and I'm heartbroken it'll be so long before I get to have it in my collection.Beautiful editions for fans & children These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

Title: Make It Stick Pdf The Science of Successful Learning
Author: Peter C. Brown
Published Date: 2014-04-14
Page: 313

“If you want to read a lively and engaging book on the science of learning, this is a must… Make It Stick benefits greatly from its use of stories about people who have achieved mastery of complex knowledge and skills. Over the course of the book, the authors weave together stories from an array of learners―surgeons, pilots, gardeners, and school and university students―to illustrate their arguments about how successful learning takes place… This is a rich and resonant book and a pleasurable read that will leave you pondering the processes through which you, and your students, acquire new knowledge and skills.”―Hazel Christie, Times Higher Education“Many educators are interested in making use of recent findings about the human brain and how we learn… Make It Stick [is] the single best work I have encountered on the subject. Anyone with an interest in teaching or learning will benefit from reading this book, which not only presents thoroughly grounded research but does so in an eminently readable way that is accessible even to students.”―James M. Lang, Chronicle of Higher Education“Aimed primarily at students, parents, and teachers, Make It Stick also offers practical advice for learners of all ages, at all stages of life… With its credible challenge to conventional wisdom, Make It Stick does point the way forward, with a very real prospect of tangible and enduring benefits.”―Glenn C. Altschuler, Psychology Today“Presents a compelling case for why we are attracted to the wrong strategies for learning and teaching―and what we can do to remedy our approaches… In clear language, Make It Stick explains the science underlying how people learn. But the authors don’t simply recite the research; they show readers how it is applied in real-life learning scenarios, with engaging stories of real people in academic, professional, and sports environments… The learning strategies proposed in this book can be implemented immediately, at no cost, and to great effect… Make It Stick will help you become a much more productive learner.”―Stephanie Castellano, TD Magazine“If I could, I would assign all professors charged with teaching undergraduates one book: Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning… It lays out what we know about the science of learning in clear, accessible prose. Every educator―and parent, and student, and professional―ought to have it on their own personal syllabus.”―Annie Murphy Paul, The Brilliant blog“This is a quite remarkable book. It describes important research findings with startling implications for how we can improve our own learning, teaching, and coaching. Even more, it shows us how more positive attitudes toward our own abilities―and the willingness to tackle the hard stuff―enables us to achieve our goals. The compelling stories bring the ideas out of the lab and into the real world.”―Robert Bjork, University of California, Los Angeles“Learning is essential and life-long. Yet as these authors argue convincingly, people often use exactly the wrong strategies and don't appreciate the ones that work. We’ve learned a lot in the last decade about applying cognitive science to real-world learning, and this book combines everyday examples with clear explanations of the research. It’s easy to read―and should be easy to learn from, too!”―Daniel L. Schacter, author of The Seven Sins of Memory“For a deeper dig into the science of learning, make sure to pick up Make It Stick. It’s an illuminating read.”―Drake Baer, Business Insider Peter C. Brown is a writer and novelist in St. Paul, Minnesota.Henry L. Roediger III is James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis.Mark A. McDaniel is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE) at Washington University in St. Louis.

To most of us, learning something "the hard way" implies wasted time and effort. Good teaching, we believe, should be creatively tailored to the different learning styles of students and should use strategies that make learning easier. Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head. Drawing on recent discoveries in cognitive psychology and other disciplines, the authors offer concrete techniques for becoming more productive learners.

Memory plays a central role in our ability to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as applying knowledge to problems never before encountered and drawing inferences from facts already known. New insights into how memory is encoded, consolidated, and later retrieved have led to a better understanding of how we learn. Grappling with the impediments that make learning challenging leads both to more complex mastery and better retention of what was learned.

Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive. Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly. More complex and durable learning come from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has set in, and interleaving the practice of one skill or topic with another. Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes, Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

The book is packed with Big Ideas. “People generally are going about learning the wrong ways. Empirical research into how we learn and remember shows that much of what we take for gospel about how to learn turns out to be largely wasted effort. Even college and medical students—whose main job is learning—rely on study techniques that are far from optimal. At the same time, this field of research, which goes back 125 years but has been particularly fruitful in recent years, has yielded a body of insights that constitute a growing science of learning: highly effective, evidence-based strategies to replace less effective but widely accepted practices that are rooted in theory, lore, and intuition. But there’s a catch: the most effective learning strategies are not intuitive. ...This is a book about what people can do for themselves right now in order to learn better and remember longer. ...We write for students and teachers, of course, and for all readers for whom effective learning is a high priority: for trainers in business, industry, and the military; for leaders of professional associations offering in-service training to their members; and for coaches. We also write for lifelong learners nearing middle age or older who want to hone their skills so as to stay in the game. While much remains to be known about learning and its neural underpinnings, a large body of research has yielded principles and practical strategies that can be put to work immediately, at no cost, and to great effect.”~ Peter Brown, Henry Roediger, Mark McDaniel from Make It StickWant to learn about the science of successful learning? Then this is the book for you. Make It Stick is written by story-teller Peter Brown and two leading cognitive scientists who have spent their careers studying learning and memory: Henry Roediger and Mark McDaniel. It’s a fascinating exploration of what science says about the most effective learning techniques— shining light on the techniques that actually work and those that do not work—even though we may think they do!Hint: Rereading, massed “practice-practice-practice” sessions, and cramming are not wise strategies. Active retrieval, interleaving, spaced repetition, reflection, elaboration, getting your mind right and practicing like an expert, on the other hand, are very good strategies. Here are some of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Fluency vs. Mastery - Don't just go w/your feelings.2. Cranberries + Testing - Active retrieval is where it's at.3. Curveballs - Interleave yourself some curves.4. Elaboration - Explain it like I'm 5.5. Testing - Static vs. Dynamic. To optimizing and actualizing and making it stick!

Title: Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World Pdf How One Family Learned That Saying No Can Lead to Life's Biggest Yes
Author: Kristen Welch
Published Date: 2016-01-26
Page: 272

Rearing children in our contemporary culture is difficult, but rearing grateful children is even harder. In Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, Kristen Welch gives solid practical advice. Grateful children become responsible adults. I highly recommend this book. (Gary Chapman, Ph.D., Author of The Five Love Languages)Parents today fight what seems like a never-ending battle against the current of the culture in raising our children. In Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, Kristen not only inspires us to raise our children differently, but she teaches us how to actually live that out in our homes. So very practical and convicting. A must-read! (Ruth Schwenk, Pastor’s wife and mama to four, coauthor of Hoodwinked, and creator of TheBetterMom.com)In this fast-paced, instant gratification culture, Kristen’s countercultural message of selflessness and gratitude is much needed! This book left me convicted, challenged, and encouraged, both personally and as a parent. (Crystal Paine, Founder of MoneySavingMom.com and New York Times bestselling author of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode)I absolutely love this book. Kristen unearths the heart issue of why many children are selfish and unaware of the needs of others. Her words engage, inspire, and instruct parents in raising emotionally strong, healthy children who are grateful in the important moments of life. (Sally Clarkson, Author of The Lifegiving Home and Own Your Life, and blogger at SallyClarkson.com)I can’t think of anyone I would trust more than Kristen to teach on this topic. She’s made her entire life a testimony to doing this well, and everyone who reads this book will be inspired by her story, her heart, her wisdom, and her love of the Lord. (Angie Smith, Bestselling author of several books and Bible studies including, Chasing God and Seamless)Kristen’s words are so timely, and I am thankful for her hard-fought wisdom. I am all ears whenever Kristen writes because she just gets it, and it was no different with this book. If you’re looking for support and practical ideas on how to raise grateful kids in an increasingly entitled world, this book is a must-read. (Sarah Mae, Author of Longing for Paris) It can be so tough not to cave when your children ask for stuff. “I want it! It would make me happy! Can’t you please get it for me?” Of course you love your kids―don’t you want them to be happy and to fit in, even if it’s tough on your wallet and your peace of mind?Kristen Welch found out firsthand it’s not that easy―and learned the surprising truth that giving our kids the world looks different than what you’d expect. In Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, Kristen shares her own family’s journey of discovering:

“But everyone else has it.” “If you loved me, you’d get it for me!” When you hear these comments from your kids, it can be tough not to cave. You love your children―don’t you want them to be happy and to fit in?

Kristen Welch knows firsthand it’s not that easy. In fact, she’s found out that when you say yes too often, it’s not only hard on your peace of mind and your wallet―it actually puts your kids at long-term risk. In Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, Kristen shares the ups and downs in her own family’s journey of discovering why it’s healthiest not to give their kids everything. Teaching them the difference between “want” and “need” is the first step in the right direction. With many practical tips and anecdotes, she shares how to say the ultimate yes as a family by bringing up faith-filled kids who will love God, serve others, and grow into hardworking, fulfilled, and successful adults.

It’s never too late to raise grateful kids. Get ready to cultivate a spirit of genuine appreciation and create a Jesus-centered home in which your kids don’t just say―but mean!―“thank you” for everything they have.

Changing my parenting for the best! I appreciate Kristen's ideas so much that sometimes I take a break from reading this book so that I can implement each idea before going on to the next idea. For example:- Teaching my 4 year old preschooler and 2 year old toddler about money. For our family, we decided to establish weekly allowance and "give, save, spend" categories for each child. Also now if they destroy or loose something important, we can take money out of their piggy bank to show them that everything isn't magically replaceable by "the store" - it's actually costs our family something!- I never wanted to go to Africa because it seems so unsafe with illness, war, etc. But this book has totally changed my perspective, and now my priority is much more to give my children the gift of grateful and generous hearts. I have talked to a South African friend who has traveled a lot and she has recommended places in Africa that would be good for my family to safely visit and help. Also we realized that our church sponsors a school there that we'd like to visit. My fear is gone and now I am excited to take these trips one day.- We started sponsoring a boy in another country for our son to learn about and pray for, and a girl for our daughter. It is a great opportunity to talk about the things that they have in common - chores! - and the things that our children have that their sponsor children don't. For example, 3 meals a day, great education, cars, a bedroom of their own, political rights, etc. There are definitely chapters in this book that go above and beyond the scope of the title - protecting your kids from porn, for example - but those chapters are so important that it's worthwhile that she wrote them. The issue is real but the book needs polishing Great concept. I agree with the issue and want grateful kids, too. However, in this book the author was getting off topic and telling random stories about her kids. It was too unorganized.STAY AWAY! Homophobic, Exclusive and Ignorant The title of the book is extremely misleading. I am not particularly religious, but thought I could continue to read this book for the parenting information assuming the Christian aspect would be positive. Instead I was shocked at the statements in the book...homophobic and ignorant writing that is exclusive to many belief systems. I can’t believe I was duped into this purchase! In no way do I want to take advice on child rearing from this author.

Title: One Shot (Jack Reacher, No. 9) Pdf
Author: Lee Child
Published Date: 2009
Page: 466

"Reacher's back ... gonzo action ... canny plotting, tight prose, swift tempo."—Kirkus Reviews "Nothing is what it seems in the riveting puzzle, as vivid set pieces and rapid-fire dialogue culminate in a slam-bang showdown in the villains' lair."—Publishers Weekly"Child has a gift for throwing you a curve just when you think you've seen it all."—Rocky Mountain News"Sparse prose and fast pacing—[One Shot] is sure to be found in many hammocks this summer."—Chicago Tribune"If you're looking for a new series, this [the Jack Reacher novels] is one of the best in the thriller genre."—Salt Lake Tribune“Electrifying . . . This series is utterly addictive.”—New York Times“Explosive.”—Miami Herald Lee Child is the author of nineteen New York Times bestselling Jack Reacher thrillers, ten of which have reached the #1 position. All have been optioned for major motion pictures; the first, Jack Reacher, was based on One Shot. Foreign rights in the Reacher series have sold in almost a hundred territories. A native of England and a former television director, Lee Child lives in New York City.

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot.

Give "One Shot" a 'shot' even if you've seen the movie Say what you will about Lee Child and his long running Jack Reacher series but he's an author who really knows how to set the hook into his readers. In any of the books within just a few pages Child's got your attention and he's a master of keeping you reading until the end; it's a gift. "One Shot" is the basis for the first of the two Jack Reacher motion pictures featuring the energetic (but woefully miscast) Tom Cruise in the starring role. I'd say about the first 2/3rds of the story are very close to the movie version but the conclusion is quite different. As is typically the case with a screenplay built from a book sacrifices must be made and in this case three female characters don't make it to the big screen. There's the accused gunman's sister, a pretty local TV news reporter, and an old flame of Reacher's from his Army day's who is now a Brigadier General in the JAG Corps. Their presence is hardly critical to the narrative but they each add something with the sister probably the most important and the BG the least. There's a mass shooting in an Indiana municipal plaza leaving five dead (a number that seems almost quaint in comparison to similar tragedies we see today), seemingly random victims of a madman. The police quickly find a suspect who has left an evidence trail that a blind man could follow. James Barr is a former Army sniper who is quickly apprehended, he isn't talking but the only thing he's said is "Get Jack Reacher". JR soon finds himself in the midwest embroiled in assisting Barr's lawyer who happens to be the daughter of the city DA. Reacher wonders why Barr asked for him, they're not friends and in fact Reacher knows some of Barr's dark past making him a questionable ally for the defense. Naturally things are not as they appear (or it would be a short story) and once JR starts digging he uncovers a complex conspiracy and facing ruthless enemies who think nothing of leaving bodies in their wake. I enjoyed "One Shot" and happily in this novel Child avoids making any of his usual gaffs in talking about firearms or military issues which was nice for a change. I've already started "The Hard Way" and it's very good.Love the stories, but the text is printed super small. Love the stories, but the text is printed super small. When did the printing get so small that I can barely read it? I now read only about half as much as I would like because if my eyes get tired I cannot focus on the tiny print any longer. I have also downloaded several Jack Reacher e-books, and I can change the font size, but I sometimes prefer to read the paperbacks. Please, someone, tell the printers that maybe they should make the print a little easier to read. Maybe they can publish an easier to read version for people like me who no longer have the perfect vision of our youths. The 1-star is for the tiny writing, so I hope someone takes notice and does something about it.PS, I won't be buying any more paperback Jack Reacher novels for this reason alone, but I will probably download the ebooks. But I have 4 recently purchased (jack reacher) paperbacks that I have yet to read. Maybe I can return them to amazon and get the ebooks instead.I enjoyed the read. After watching the Reacher movie several times and seeing several adds for Lee Child's books, I took a look at his website. I was pleased to see so many I just might read. I also was pleased to see them listed in chronological order. I decided that the best strategy for me would be to read them in order. So "One Shot" was the tenth book I read. There were many differences between the book and the movie. I might have liked the movie better, but I don't think that comparison is fair to either. I liked the 'new' characters and the way Reacher used a totally different set of clues to solve the mystery of James Barr in the book. There was one paragraph that I noticed that might not have meant a lot to many readers. It had nothing to do with the plot of the book. Just Reacher musing while riding in the back seat of a car traveling through a section on the outskirts of town. It is on page 392 of the 2012 Dell Mass Market Edition paperback. It is the first paragraph after the scene break beginning with "The co-worker lived in a plane...." I agree totally with Reacher's last sentence in the paragraph.I would like to have given the book it's fifth star, but Child is still suffering a bit from living in the UK so very long. Can't wait to read others in the series. "An ode to William Faulkner. . . . As Southern as it gets."—Deep South Magazine

A compelling addition to contemporary Southern Gothic fiction, deftly weaving together local legends, family secrets, and the search for a missing child.
Siblings Bert, Willet, and Pansy know better than to go swimming at the old rock quarry. According to their father, it's the Devil's place, a place that's been cursed and forgotten. But Mississippi Delta summer days are scorching hot and they can't resist cooling off in the dark, bottomless water. Until the day six-year-old Pansy vanishes. Not drowned, not lost . . . simply gone. When their father disappears as well, Bert and Willet leave their childhoods behind to try and hold their broken family together.

Years pass with no sign, no hope of ever finding Pansy alive, and as surely as their mother died of a broken heart, Bert and Willet can't move on. So when clues surface drawing them to the remote tip of Florida, they drop everything and drive south. Deep in the murky depths of the Florida Everglades they may find the answer to Pansy's mysterious disappearance . . . but truth, like the past, is sometimes better left where it lies.

Perfect for fans of Flannery O'Connor and Dorothy Allison, The Past Is Never is an atmospheric, haunting story of myths, legends, and the good and evil we carry in our hearts.

compelling mystery I loved this book. It's a wonderful mystery wrapped in a family saga. As the relationships between people unfold and each generation gives up its secrets, the story holds on to the reader tighter and tighter. A multi-layered study of human nature and the times the characters lived through make this book a keeper. Happy ending? Hard to say. Realistic, yes. It's Not Even Past The title and setting, partially set in the woods and cotton fields of Mississippi, clearly invoke Faulkner. The writing is not so much like Faulkner, but the story sure is. The narrator's young sister vanishes while swimming in the local flooded quarry. A quarry their father says is cursed and haunted. Their itinerant criminal father also seemingly vanishes when he fails to return home. The years go by and our narrator grows up and searches for answers that leads her to the Florida Everglades. Family secrets, race, superstition, legend, murder, good & evil... all mix in a way familiar to anyone that's read ‘Absalom, Absalom!’"The past is never dead. It's not even past." I think Faulkner would approve.Boring, average writing, shallow characters The first few pages of this book made it seem intriguing. And ... It had won a prize! That makes it a good book, right?Wrong.Comparing this book to Faulkner - just because the author used a cheap trick by selecting a Faulkner quote for the book's title - is like comparing a fine Thoroughbred to a country mule. This is not Faulkneresque. It's not Walker Percy-esque. Or Eudora Welty-esque. It's a poser of a book, a book that pretends to be Southern gothic, that teases you with a mystery, then draws out the mystery for pages and pages - long after the plot should actually have gone somewhere - and in the end - SPOILER ALERT - what happened is just what one of the main characters thinks happened all along. All the malarky about Bubba and the aliens, and Granny Clem and all the women she helps ... it's all BS. It's filler to kill time because the author didn't really have much of a plot. The author could have left out Bubba and the aliens and most of Granny Clem's bit without affecting the story, but again, it was a cheap trick designed to fool you because, really, the author didn't have anything but an obvious solution to the "mystery." So Dad took Pansy. Gee. What we all thought was most likely ended up being the answer. The book goes back and forth in time, without any warning. Somewhere in the middle of the book you suddenly lurch backward in time. These episodes are handled quite clumsily by the author, are not well done, and they don't add to the mystery. The reader figures out who these people are from the very first, and thereafter the answer to the mystery, about 200 pages before the author gets around to finally revealing what we've already known.I love a good Southern book. This isn't it. Though it does have a lot of Southern clichés and of course we have to throw in some racism for flavor to make it authentic. I gave it two stars because it's long and the author - I guess - spent time on it, but why this book won a prize is beyond me. The writing is only average; about a third of the book could have been cut out and made for a tighter, better story; and the author never made me care about the characters. Even the narrator is a ditz and a whiner. I had to make myself finish it because I hate paying for something I don't finish. But man, it was hard to keep going.Avoid this book and read Faulkner instead. I recommend "As I Lay Dying" or "Flags in the Dust." Just for starters.

Title: Talking to Strangers Pdf What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know

Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and number-one best-selling author of The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, David and Goliath, and What the Dog Saw, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers - and why they often go wrong.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true?

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland - throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his number one best seller, David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

Doesn't deliver. As one reviewer mentioned, the Interlude and the section on Brock Turner are absolutely cringeworthy for a host of reasons. I too almost stopped reading before the I got to the first chapter, and now I'm sort of disappointed that I read all the way to the end. Fascinating facts are revealed in typical Gladwell fashion which keeps the pace moving. But he comes terribly short on providing any sort of value for actually talking to strangers. Gladwell basically says, "Hey! We suck at talking to strangers. Here's some interesting situations that prove my point. But I have no ideas on how to be better at talking to strangers."Sadly, Gladwell places his foot in his mouth... Wow, does this book ever suffer from a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease!I almost didn’t make it past the introduction. In my pre-publication copy, Gladwell writes, “The Sandra Bland case came in the middle of a strange interlude in American public life” and then goes on to discuss a series of cases of police violence against black people that happened around 2014.“Strange interlude.” Really? That phrasing suggests that this treatment was some sort of aberration in American history and that the violence only happened during the few years he references. Did Gladwell really mean to ignore America’s long history of this problem?I don’t think so? I think he may have meant that the attention paid to police violence was unusual, but dude, choose your words much more carefully.Later on, there are some good points made about how and why we tend to misunderstand each other. But, again, I almost put the book down, this time while reading the chapter on the Brock Turner sexual assault case. Without going into detail, that chapter could only have been written by someone who's buried his head in the sand over the past five years or so.It’s tough to ignore the problematic elements of Talking to Strangers. I could definitely see the discussion of the causes of sexual assault offending some readers to the point that they abandon the book altogether. I’ve definitely enjoyed other books by the author a lot more than this one. Two stars. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for giving me a DRC of this book."We think we can easily see into the hearts of others based on the flimsiest of clues." Malcolm Gladwell is a gifted writer who engages our minds and emotions in his works of non-fiction. In "Talking to Strangers,” he tells us true stories that, at first, seem to be unrelated. A police stop ends in tragedy; Neville Chamberlain and other political figures famously misconstrued Hitler's bellicose intentions; experienced judges grant bail to defendants who, they realize too late, should have remained in jail; the sociopath, Bernie Madoff, conducted a fraudulent investment scheme for years, deceiving many individuals who thought that he was a genius at making money; Amanda Knox served prison time for a murder that she did not commit.Studies show that most of us who encounter apparently benevolent individuals are predisposed to believe that they are not putting on an act. Conversely, when we meet a man or woman who behaves weirdly or inappropriately, we are likely to jump to negative conclusions about him or her, even when there is little hard evidence to support our assumptions. The author suggests that many of us have an inflated opinion of our ability to size up people. Research suggests that we are not as objective as we would like to believe, and are therefore prone to misinterpret comments, intonations, facial expressions, and gestures. Moreover, we do not always realize that people whose backgrounds differ from ours may communicate in unfamiliar ways.Gladwell asks: How did double-agents who telegraphed their guilt get away with their treasonous behavior for so long? Why didn't everyone recognize Madoff for what he is—a ruthless swindler? Which of Amanda Knox's personality traits, remarks, and deeds convinced Italian authorities that she killed her roommate? These compelling examples raise intriguing questions about why we sometimes reach erroneous conclusions when we assess the truthfulness of our fellow human beings. it should be noted that a few chapters in this book—such as the essays on suicide, young adults who drink so heavily that they black out, and the efforts of police to cut down on crime—are thought-provoking but oversimplified and not particularly relevant to Gladwell's central premise. Still, this work of non-fiction is an entertaining and enlightening wake-up call. We should be cautious when we decide who our friends are as opposed to who is likely to stab us in the back. Too often we are dead wrong.
