"Reacher's back ... gonzo action ... canny plotting, tight prose, swift tempo."—Kirkus Reviews "Nothing is what it seems in the riveting puzzle, as vivid set pieces and rapid-fire dialogue culminate in a slam-bang showdown in the villains' lair."—Publishers Weekly"Child has a gift for throwing you a curve just when you think you've seen it all."—Rocky Mountain News"Sparse prose and fast pacing—[One Shot] is sure to be found in many hammocks this summer."—Chicago Tribune"If you're looking for a new series, this [the Jack Reacher novels] is one of the best in the thriller genre."—Salt Lake Tribune“Electrifying . . . This series is utterly addictive.”—New York Times“Explosive.”—Miami Herald Lee Child is the author of nineteen New York Times bestselling Jack Reacher thrillers, ten of which have reached the #1 position. All have been optioned for major motion pictures; the first, Jack Reacher, was based on One Shot. Foreign rights in the Reacher series have sold in almost a hundred territories. A native of England and a former television director, Lee Child lives in New York City.

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot.

Give "One Shot" a 'shot' even if you've seen the movie Say what you will about Lee Child and his long running Jack Reacher series but he's an author who really knows how to set the hook into his readers. In any of the books within just a few pages Child's got your attention and he's a master of keeping you reading until the end; it's a gift. "One Shot" is the basis for the first of the two Jack Reacher motion pictures featuring the energetic (but woefully miscast) Tom Cruise in the starring role. I'd say about the first 2/3rds of the story are very close to the movie version but the conclusion is quite different. As is typically the case with a screenplay built from a book sacrifices must be made and in this case three female characters don't make it to the big screen. There's the accused gunman's sister, a pretty local TV news reporter, and an old flame of Reacher's from his Army day's who is now a Brigadier General in the JAG Corps. Their presence is hardly critical to the narrative but they each add something with the sister probably the most important and the BG the least. There's a mass shooting in an Indiana municipal plaza leaving five dead (a number that seems almost quaint in comparison to similar tragedies we see today), seemingly random victims of a madman. The police quickly find a suspect who has left an evidence trail that a blind man could follow. James Barr is a former Army sniper who is quickly apprehended, he isn't talking but the only thing he's said is "Get Jack Reacher". JR soon finds himself in the midwest embroiled in assisting Barr's lawyer who happens to be the daughter of the city DA. Reacher wonders why Barr asked for him, they're not friends and in fact Reacher knows some of Barr's dark past making him a questionable ally for the defense. Naturally things are not as they appear (or it would be a short story) and once JR starts digging he uncovers a complex conspiracy and facing ruthless enemies who think nothing of leaving bodies in their wake. I enjoyed "One Shot" and happily in this novel Child avoids making any of his usual gaffs in talking about firearms or military issues which was nice for a change. I've already started "The Hard Way" and it's very good.Love the stories, but the text is printed super small. Love the stories, but the text is printed super small. When did the printing get so small that I can barely read it? I now read only about half as much as I would like because if my eyes get tired I cannot focus on the tiny print any longer. I have also downloaded several Jack Reacher e-books, and I can change the font size, but I sometimes prefer to read the paperbacks. Please, someone, tell the printers that maybe they should make the print a little easier to read. Maybe they can publish an easier to read version for people like me who no longer have the perfect vision of our youths. The 1-star is for the tiny writing, so I hope someone takes notice and does something about it.PS, I won't be buying any more paperback Jack Reacher novels for this reason alone, but I will probably download the ebooks. But I have 4 recently purchased (jack reacher) paperbacks that I have yet to read. Maybe I can return them to amazon and get the ebooks instead.I enjoyed the read. After watching the Reacher movie several times and seeing several adds for Lee Child's books, I took a look at his website. I was pleased to see so many I just might read. I also was pleased to see them listed in chronological order. I decided that the best strategy for me would be to read them in order. So "One Shot" was the tenth book I read. There were many differences between the book and the movie. I might have liked the movie better, but I don't think that comparison is fair to either. I liked the 'new' characters and the way Reacher used a totally different set of clues to solve the mystery of James Barr in the book. There was one paragraph that I noticed that might not have meant a lot to many readers. It had nothing to do with the plot of the book. Just Reacher musing while riding in the back seat of a car traveling through a section on the outskirts of town. It is on page 392 of the 2012 Dell Mass Market Edition paperback. It is the first paragraph after the scene break beginning with "The co-worker lived in a plane...." I agree totally with Reacher's last sentence in the paragraph.I would like to have given the book it's fifth star, but Child is still suffering a bit from living in the UK so very long. Can't wait to read others in the series. Mike
